Idaho Smart Women, Smart Money Conference - Idaho Everywoman's Financial Conference
The State Financial Officers Foundation is pleased to present Smart Women Smart Money. SWSM conferences provide women of diverse ages and circumstances with the necessary information and tools to take control of their financial lives. The message of the conference is that it is never too late, or too early to learn about finances.

Ron Crane

Ron Crane - Boise
Idaho State Treasurer

Ron G. Crane was born in Nampa, Idaho. He is a graduate of Nampa Christian High School and later graduated from college with an Associate's Degree. He received an honorary doctorate from Ohio Christian University in 2008. He served as a member in the Idaho National Guard from 1971 -- 1977, receiving recognition as Idaho's Soldier of the Year in 1975.

Prior to his election as Treasurer in 1998, Mr. Crane served 16 years in the Idaho House of Representatives. While there, he chaired the House State Affairs Committee for 4 years and the Business Committee for 7 years. He also served as co-chairman of the Interim Committee on Electrical Restructuring. During his public service, he received the Guardian of Small Business Award from NFIB and the Legislative Champion of the Family Award.

Mr. Crane started his own successful business, Crane Alarm Service, in 1979. Today, Crane Alarm is one of the oldest and largest alarm companies in Idaho. He is a member of the Nampa and Caldwell, Idaho Chambers of Commerce, was a founding member of the Lifeline Crisis Pregnancy Center, and served on the board of trustees for Nampa Christian Schools.

Mr. Crane has been married to his wife, Cheryl, since 1969. They have six children, four girls and two boys, and twelve grandchildren. The Cranes reside in Nampa, Idaho.

Carolyn  Holly

Carolyn  Holly - Boise

A long time and active member of the Treasurer Valley, Carolyn Holly currently serves as Vice President of Marketing, Communication, and Public Relations for Saint Alphonsus Health System. Within the new role, Carolyn serves as a key liaison to the communities that Saint Alphonsus serves. She is an instrumental part of developing meaningful relationships with local resources and organizations, evolving a strategy for public collaboration, and advancing Saint Alphonsus' mission to be a transformative healing presence within the community.

Carolyn enjoyed a 33 year career at KTVB Channel 7 television, where she became one of Idaho's most experienced and best known television personalities. Carolyn has acted as an important representative and volunteer for many Treasurer Valley organizations including Boise Public Schools Foundation, Idaho Youth Sports Commission, the Saint Alphonsus Foundation, FUNDSY and the FACES Foundation.

Maddie Zahm

Maddie Zahm - Moscow

Maddie Zahm is a 20 year old singer/songwriter from Boise, Idaho. Last season she made it into the Top 48 of American Idol on ABC.

After competing on American Idol, Maddie took a break from college where she was working to become a Special Educator and is attempting to turn her music into groceries.
Maddie's passions are promoting Kindness, Inclusion and Integrity while laughing and spending a great deal of time looking for her car keys.

Philip Award and was formerly named only 1 of 4 women to the “Top 40 Under Forty” Business Executives by Utah Business Magazine as well as being named as a “Top 20 Under Forty Rising Star” by the Inland NW Catalyst Magazine.
She currently serves as a top-rated Faculty Member for Pacific Coast Banking Graduate School at University of Washington and serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for United Way of Pierce County.

Kara Besst is the President and CEO of Gritman Medical Center, where she has worked for 24 years. An Idaho native originally from Idaho Falls, Kara graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Prior to graduating, Kara began at Gritman Medical Center as an Intern and was hired as an Accountant in Gritman's Fiscal Services Department after earning her degree. She became Gritman's Chief Financial Officer in November 2000 and became Gritman's President and CEO in February 2011. She lives in Moscow with her family.

Retail Regional Manager-Senior Vice President, Columbia Bank

Patti Borchardt, Retail Regional Manager - Senior Vice President at Columbia Bank was born in Yakima, Washington. She graduated from Selah High School and later received her Associate’s Degree from Yakima Valley Community College. Soon after receiving her degree she started her career in Community Banking and has never left! She currently leads a team of 20 Branch Managers in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. She has over 23 years of banking experience, 12 of which have been with Columbia Bank. Patti has a history of consistently building teams, customer relationships and delivering results.

Patti and her husband, Carey, of 25 years relocated to Spokane three years ago from Yakima, WA when she was promoted to Regional Manager. She currently is attending her 3rd year of Pacific Coast Banking School which is a Premier National Graduate School of Banking where you develop strategic thinking and problem solving skills through comprehensive understanding and much more.

Patti is extremely passionate and heavily involved with the YMCA, for the simply reason they help develop our Youth, they promote healthy living, and teach us all to be socially responsibility. The YMCA also commits, invests and partners with the communities they serve.

Todd Christensen

Todd Christensen - Moscow
Director of Education

Author and financial educator, Todd R. Christensen, AFC, MIM, MA is Education Manager for Debt Reduction Services Inc, a nationwide nonprofit credit counseling agency. Author of Everyday Money for Everyday People (2014), Todd develops educational programs and produces materials that teach personal financial skills and responsibilities. He facilitates hundreds of workshops annually to thousands of individuals on the fundamentals of effective money management.

Todd develops and publishes free personal finance webinars for all ages, including his Real Solutions, Everyday Money, and Financially Empowered programs available 24/7 through

Todd most recently served as board secretary of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, has served as president of the Idaho Jump$tart Coalition and serves on program coordinating committees for three housing authorities in Idaho.

His other published articles and booklets have addressed topics ranging from marriage and money to raising financially smart children, from recovering from bankruptcy to controlling holiday spending.

He thrives on speaking at conferences and meetings and facilitating classroom presentations at all levels.

Todd and his wife, Wendy, have four children and enjoy summer trips to the Oregon coast and family movie nights on the couch. He is an amateur songwriter and loves accompanying children’s singing at church on the piano.

Kelly Hunt

Kelly Hunt - Moscow
P1FCU Community Relationship Specialist

Kelly Hunt started her career with P1FCU in 2007. During her eleven years at P1FCU, Kelly has been a member service representative, consumer loan officer, assistant branch manager, and is currently the Community Relationship Specialist, overseeing the credit union’s financial literacy programs, sponsorship efforts, event planning, and volunteer coordination.

Kelly graduated cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts, from Lewis Clark State College. She is passionate about education, has helped to develop and implement P1FCU’s Scholarship Program. Kelly has also increased the reach of P1FCU’s partnership with the financial literacy program, Banzai. One of Kelly’s favorite aspects of her position is the opportunity to go into junior high, high school, and college classes to teach financial literacy. The need to educate our youth about how to manage money, and establish credit the right way, is finally becoming a priority in schools and Kelly loves to see how inquisitive and engaged the students are. Most adults today did not learn about money in school and understanding finances at a young age can save a lifetime of struggle.

Kelly was born in Spokane and had the wonderful opportunity to live overseas in New Zealand and Australia through all of her teen years before moving back to Southern California. For the last twelve years, Kelly has been proud to call Idaho home.

Chris is a Texas A&M University graduate with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Accounting. He serves on numerous local and national boards of directors for non-profit organizations, is the Chairman of the Asotin School Board, a Distinguished Life Trustee of the St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, and founding board member of ROC Rescue Mission. Chris' family pioneered in Clearwater County and he is a true Orofino Maniac.

Associate Professor and Extension Educator in Family and Consumer Sciences for Latah County

Karen Richel is an Associate Professor and Extension Educator in Family and Consumer Sciences for Latah County and is the Family Finance educator in the ten North Idaho counties. Providing the communities that she serves with research-based information, Karen specializes in providing basic financial education for every age and socioeconomic group including low-income families, soon-to-be-released prisoners, and students. She offer classes, workshops and simulations on topics ranging from goal setting and tracking expenses to retirement and end-of-life planning. In addition, she is an Accredited Financial Counselor and a Certified Money Coach. These designations allow her to provide free, one-on-one counseling sessions to help community members build strong financial foundations and secure balanced financial lives.

Rusty Schatz

Janice earned her BA, MA and PhD at the University of California, Irvine, and her JD from the University of Idaho. Prior to “coming to the law” in 1998, Janice’s first career in California was in the field of K-12 education, in which she began as a teacher, and worked her way through the years to administrative positions of principal, director and assistant superintendent of instruction, and, superintendent of schools. Janice continues her love of teaching and “shaping minds,” even while she practices law.

In order to keep active in community affairs and contribute to society as a well-informed
volunteer, she serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Palouse Land Trust and Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Good Samaritan Society – Moscow Village and Fairview Estates – both organizations located in Moscow. Janice continually emphasizes to her clients and students the importance of being well-rounded and pursuing other areas of joy outside of work and volunteerism; thus, she writes, travels, enjoys her two dogs, two cockatiels and her turtle, as well as playing the piano and writing novels, and, spending time with her husband and family.

Stacey Swift, branch manager, leads Wells Fargo’s Moscow Eastside location. Swift grew up in eastern Washington, earning a business degree from Eastern Washington University. She began her career as an independent insurance agent and eventually moved into banking. A ten year veteran of Wells Fargo, Swift has been a personal banker, business advocate and branch manager. She is currently the small business proponent for north central Idaho. Swift relocated to Moscow in 2013, with her husband and their three children. She spends her free time coordinating the schedules of the entire family and never leaves home without a folding chair, sunscreen and whatever attire the current sporting season requires.

Rhonda currently serves as VP / Treasury Management Officer for Columbia Bank, and covers all of Idaho and Eastern Washington. Rhonda has been working with this same group of awesome bankers for 19 years. She loves the people she works with and the clients she serves.
Rhonda is a native Idahoan, graduating from Cambridge High School and Boise State University.
Rhonda has been an active member of the Nampa Rotary Club for several years, where she has served as Secretary, Programs Chair, and Coats For Kids Chair. She was honored with the Rotarian of the Year award from her Nampa Rotary Club in the 2015-2016 year. She was also proud to be chosen as an Idaho Business Review Women of the Year Honoree in 2017.
Rhonda’s favorite pastime is spending time with her family. Whether playing with her grandson, enjoying a delicious family potluck or getting together for a rousing game of Phase 10, being with her family is extremely important to Rhonda. She is also an avid reader and can often be found curled up on the couch with a cup of hot coffee and a good book.

Marlys is born and raised in Troy, Idaho. In 1975 she left Idaho to join her husband, who was serving in the Air Force. After 20 years they retired back to Idaho. She has worked in the financial industry for over 45 years starting out as a bank teller and holding various other positions. Marlys joined Latah Credit Union’s team in 2002 as a loan officer and is now serving as the President/CEO.
